For the Pets

Living in an RV may require some alterations to your rig. We’ve been RVing with our 2 cats (Kitty and Hector) since we started life on the road, and now we’ve also got Dottie, our 50lb pup. To read about what alterations we had to do to the RV, check out our blog post here.

So, how do we all happily live in a 33’ home on wheels? See for yourself!

+ The Scoop on the Poop

We've gone through many types of litter over the years, and we're happy to have finally settled on Pretty Litter. This stuff is amazing and affordable. It lasts an entire month without odor and the cats love it! It also monitors their health by changing color when they go. It's amazing! Click here or the picture to receive $10 off!

We also use disposable litter boxes, because the plastic ones started smelling the RV up after a few months.

Thankfully, Dottie poops outside. Unfortuately, we still have to take care of that. After going through 4+ poop bags/day for a few months, we got tired of spending money on bags. We opted for this little pooper scooper and we love it!

+ Outdoor Time!

Since we don't have a fenced in yard, we've got all sorts of ways for Dottie to play outdoors safely. We are always with her when she's outside, because she is an escape artist when it comes to harnesses. We have a 100ft leash for "off-leash" play and a stake with a 20ft tether for our yard.

Kitty prefers to stay indoors (no matter how much we try to get him outside), but Hector likes going for walks. We've got plenty to keep the entertained inside and out.

+ Safety Tips

We go into more detail about how we cat-proofed the RV here. Basically, we used pet-proof screening to cover up the area under the dash that Hector tried to crawl into. We just have to remove it when we drive - no big deal.

The previous owners of Rhiannon put aluminum sheets on the screen door, which prevents them from damaging the screen and jumping outside.

As for Dottie, we had to get a crate for her to eat in (she can be a little food aggressive). This goes under our table, so it doesn't take up much room.

When we are driving, the cats are locked up in their cubbies (upper cabinets they hang out in all the time). On moving days, like to hide in places we can't get them out of, like under slides or brake pedals. This can be very dangerous, so we always check where everyone is before retracting or extending a slide.

Dottie either rides in the car or she sits between us. She could of course ride in her crate, but this causes more distress for her.

+ Toys and Enrichment

The cats have a few toys they really love playing with. They have a ball/scratcher toy and a tunnel sitting on the dash (which is their patio or catio I should say). Hector cannot live without his rainbow snake, which we hang from an upper cabinet while we aren't playing with him.

As for Dottie, she goes through toys pretty quickly. We did just get her a babble ball, that she plays with indoors and outside. This is a great way for her to get that puppy energy out!

Feeder balls are also a great way to slow feeding down and to get dogs more active indoors. We've gone through several, but this is our fave. Of course, the classic kong is a great one too!
