How to Dismember an RV Recliner

So you want to get rid of that bulky recliner in your entry way, hmmm? If you're like me, you've been searching for a video tutorial or blog post of someone doing this without any special tools. No luck? Me either.

Loren made the mistake of leaving me home with nothing to do one day, so I decided to go at this project on my own. I wanted to share how I succesfully destroyed our ugly recliner, so that maybe someone out there will be able to do the same. Oh, and the best part- I only used one tool. This locking pair of pliers will get the job done!

First you'll have to detach it from the clamp thing holding the chair in place. This isn't difficult, it should come right off.

Alright, let's get started.

Turn the chair over. You want to work from the bottom up. Detach the four bolts holding the swivel base.

Now you can remove the two foot rest pieces. The small one is held on by two bolts and the larger one has four bolts. Of course, this will vary somewhat from RV to RV.

There are two bolts at the top of the cushion area. If you're looking at the base of the chair, then it's the top right and left.

Remove the two bolts at the base of the cushion. You may have to turn the chair on it's side for these. This enables you to pull the seat cushion off of the reclining mechanism.

Time to move up to where the back of the recliner meets the reclining mechanism. There are two bolts on each side of the chair that must be removed. To better see them, you can pull the fabric off- it's stapled on.

At this point you're probably wondering "what the f%$k did I get myself into?!" Or "where'd I put the axe?" Perhaps, you're phone battery has died and now you have to wait for it to charge to use the flashlight. Either way, I suggest a cold beer or adult beverage of your choice. You've earned it! Only a few more bolts to go..just think about the extra space you'll have and how the cats will be able to vomit where this demonic recliner used to be.

Next, remove the cloven feet. Just kidding, it's more bolts. I still had trouble seeing, so I removed more of the fabric.

The last bolt will be the most difficult. That's the chair fighting back. It's holding on to those last few moments. It will cut you, scrape you, bruise you, and pinch you. Don't give up! You're almost there! Send that chair back from whence it came!

Ahhh, the aftermath. A job well done. Well, a job done that is. Don't ask me how to put it back together.
